Why does my kid have so many cavities?
Why does my kid have so many cavities?
Did you know that over half of cavities in baby teeth are between the teeth. This means they are not visible without x-rays. We often find parents asking, “Why does my kid have so many cavities?” If a child is not able to get x-rays until they are six or seven there may be no visible signs of cavities to the dentist. Our office has recently updated our equipment to include smaller digital x-rays. This technology will help our patients and the environment. We can not detect the start of cavities in children sooner, which an help save you money.
What do x-rays show?
An x-ray can show many problems with the teeth, tissues, and bone that one cannot see just by looking in your mouth. Finding and treating dental problems at an early stage can save time, money, and discomfort. It also helps prevent more serious health problems. An x-ray can show:
- Small areas of decay between the teeth or below fillings
- Bone destruction from a tooth infection (such as an abscess) or a cyst
- Bone loss due to periodontal (gum) disease
- Developmental defects and some types of tumors
- The effects of trauma
- The position of unerupted teeth in children and adults

Making a digital x-ray allows it to be sent to a computer and analyzed quickly. Because the images are stored on a computer, the dental office can print or copy digital x-rays.
With our new digital x-rays, a small plate is placed in your mouth to capture the tooth image. As always, steps are taken to limit your exposure to radiation from x-rays. Although digital x-rays involve less radiation than film x-rays, we still have patients wear shielding as the x-ray is taken. Our office hopes this technology will give you the most advanced, efficient, and convenient dental care available.
