Why I Became a Pediatric Dentist
My desire to work with children was apparent when I was attending college. As a senior in college I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to coach football and basketball to junior high school students at Northwest Junior High School in Coralville, IA. It was the beginning of my career as a professional. The student athletes were impressive. The true spirit of the students came out. The practice field made barriers disappear as all worked towards a common goal. It was an inspiring experience that helped me gain an understanding of individuals working together and developing relationships. It was the start of my desire to work with children.
Shortly after graduation from college I was offered an opportunity with Upward Bound, a summer camp experience for would be first generation college students. The group included high school students from Davenport, Muscatine, and Columbus Junction. The students were invited to attend summer classes at The University of Iowa and given a college experience where they went to classes and participated in activities. At the end of the program students were rewarded with an educational trip. It has been exciting to see and follow these students and see those that have achieved their dreams.
As my academic career progressed The University of Iowa provided me with the opportunity to work with the Pediatric Dental Club (Iowa SUAT). During dental school I was able to participate in many events that further cultivated my interest in children. Knowing that I could confidently provide care for infants, toddlers, and teens was important. It inspired me to pursue a career in Pediatric Dentistry. Upon graduation from The University of Iowa I was accepted into the Advanced Education Program in Pediatric Dentistry at The University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Through my residency program, I grew as a professional and learned how to treat every child according to his or her needs. I challenged myself and taken a variety of cases, and worked to develop relationships with my patients. I got to know many children and families very well in my short two years; they were truly unforgettable. I will think of them often throughout my career and remember many of them by name.
The training I received at The University of Iowa and University of Nevada, Las Vegas inspired me to complete Board Certification in Pediatric Dentistry. During the final year of my residency program, I passed the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry Qualifying Examination and became eligible to take the second part of the board exam. Approximately one year later I successfully completed the Oral Clinical Examination on September 19th, 2016, and became a Diplomate, American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
I pledge to my patients and their families that I will stay up to date on clinical practices in dentistry, and adapt and change as the profession does a life long learner committed to excellence in pediatric dentistry. I am proud to be a practicing pediatric dentist in Muscatine.
Respectfully,
Jarod W. Johnson, DDS
Diplomate, American Board of Pediatric Dentistry
