Infants and Toddlers

shutterstock_110741879The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the American Dental Association (ADA) recommend that your child’s first dental visit occurs by your child’s first birthday. The first visit will establish your child’s dental home. The dental home is a place where your child can receive preventive care, routine examination, and emergent care if necessary. It also creates a place where you can receive oral health education specific to your child’s stage in growth and development.

At a young age your child may not be able to sit still or follow directions, and will likely not remember his or her first visit.  During the visit you will be able to participate in an exam and be close to your child throughout the appointment.  In addition to an exam your child will receive a cleaning where you will be taught to care for your child’s teeth, a fluoride treatment, and x-rays if necessary.

At your first visit Dr. Jarod will provide education on:

  • Brushing techniques suitable for your child’s age
  • Information on toothpaste and fluoride use
  • Dietary habits
  • Injury prevention
  • Non-nutritive habits (pacifier use, thumb sucking, etc)
  • Speech and language development

Older Childrenshutterstock_132990260

The first dental visit to our office for older children can be an enjoyable experience.  It provides an opportunity for your child to become familiar with the dental office, our staff, and have a fun, positive experience.  At your child’s first visit he or she will be able to receive an exam, cleaning, fluoride treatment, and x-rays if necessary.  We encourage parents to accompany their child during their first dental visit.  If your child is timid he or she may benefit from an office tour prior to an exam appointment.

At your first visit Dr. Jarod will provide education on:

  • Brushing techniques suitable for your child’s age
  • Information on toothpaste and fluoride use
  • Dietary habits
  • Injury prevention
  • Non-nutritive habits (pacifier use, thumb sucking, nail biting, bruxism, etc)
  • Speech and language development
  • Developing occlusion (bite)
  • Assessment for sealants

Special Healthcare Needs

Dr. Jarod is currently receiving advanced training in the field of Special Health Care Needs for children and adults. Patients with Special Health Care Needs are encouraged to notify the office when scheduling an initial exam such that if accommodations are necessary they can be made to ensure a suitable visit.

Special health care needs include any physical, developmental, mental, sensory, behavioral, cognitive, or emotional impairment or limiting condition that requires medical management, health care intervention, and/or use of specialized services or programs. The condition may be congenital, developmental, or acquired through disease, trauma, or environmental cause and may impose limitations in performing daily self-maintenance activities or substantial limitations in a major life activity. Health care for individuals with special needs requires specialized knowledge acquired by additional training, as well as increased awareness and attention, adaptation, and accommodative measures beyond what are considered routine.
