Dr. Jarod and his Senior Design Team

Engineering Students to Work With Arctic Dental

The University of Iowa College of Engineering and Arctic Dental will collaborate on a project this year.  Each year engineering students complete a Senior Design Project in order to demonstrate skills learned through their education.  Project ideas are pitched to students during the beginning of the course, and selected based on mutual interest and merit.  Last week Dr. Jarod Johnson, a graduate of The University of Iowa College of Engineering, presented an idea to a class of Mechanical Engineering students via Skype.  He outlined a transition in Pediatric Dentistry that is utilized to prevent the progression of decay in children and provide a cost savings to patients and insurance companies.  The students learned about the cause of cavities, and the problems decay in young children.  The project provides students with a great opportunity to improve the delivery of non-invasive patient care.  Students in the class were allowed to select a project of interest, and a group of three students have chosen to work with Dr. Jarod on a medical device to assist in the application of mendicants in the oral cavity.

Arctic Dental is excited to provide mentoring and guidance for the students, and will work to ensure the project will have a positive outcome.  It will hopefully be the first project of many in collaboration with the College of Engineering.  Dr. Jarod initially made the connection with a former professor and staff member this past summer regarding the idea, and is grateful for the opportunity to serve as a mentor to students.

Dr. Jarod Johnson graduated from the University of Iowa College of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering.  He went on to pursue a Doctorate of Dental Surgery from The University of Iowa College of Dentistry, and completed a Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry at The University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Dental Medicine.  He currently practices as the only full time Pediatric Dentist in Muscatine, IA.

Dr. Jarod has received advanced training in behavior management, sedation, hospital dentistry, trauma, special health care needs, interceptive orthodontics, space maintenance, oral hygiene, and dietary counseling. His energetic personality allows him to relate to kids on an individual level. He understands the importance of children having a positive dental experience and strives to provide the best care tailored to each child’s needs. Dr. Jarod enjoys educating children and their families on the importance of oral health so they can establish good habits for a lifetime of smiles. His goal is to develop relationships with each of his patients to establish a dental home that is welcoming from infancy through adolescence.
