Title: Tipping the Cap: New Developments in Materials Used in Vital Pulp Therapy
Presenter: Jarod Johnson, DDS
Summary
Recently there have been developments in the field of vital pulp therapy for immature permanent teeth. This is specifically in regards to materials; driven in part by techniques such as direct pulp capping, pulpotomy, and regenerative endodontics. The discussion will address the basis for vital pulp treatment with an emphasis on reviewing currently available materials; including new materials that have been introduced into the market.
Purpose
To provide practitioners with the best evidence based on current research of the biological basis for materials used in vital pulp therapy. Materials discussed will be zinc oxide eugenol (ZOE), calcium hydroxide (Ca[OH]2), glass ionomer, composite, amalgam, mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), calcium silicates (Biodentine, TheralCal LC, etc).
Treatment (procedure)
Indirect pulp cap, direct pulp cap, and pulpotomy. Apexogenesis.
Conclusion
When performing vital pulp therapy it is imperative that practitioners understand the biologic basis of treatment modalities to increase likelihood of a positive outcome. Proper diagnosis, case selection, and material properties can aid in the goal of apexogenesis. Practitioners should continue to look for the current best evidence when selecting a treatment modality and material.
