Will Getting Teeth Pulled Hurt My Child?

Despite popular conceptions, some tooth extractions do not cause much immediate pain. In most cases, the tooth and surround gum will be numbed. However, sedation may be required for a more complicated procedure. A tooth that has to be cut from the jaw will likely cause pain, but one that is simply removed from the gun most likely will not.

Over-the-counter medication is usually enough to treat whatever pain a child experiences from the extraction.

What to Expect After a Dental Extraction Procedure

After a tooth extraction, we will provide instructions on care.

  • Gently bite down on a clean piece of gauze and replace it every twenty minutes.
  • To reduce swelling, ice your cheek for an hour in two twenty minute sessions with a break in between.
  • Call our office if your child is still bleeding an hour after your procedure.

Once the bleeding stops, a clot will form over your wound. This will aid in healing.

  • Avoid any action which could disturb the clot for the first twenty-four hours, especially spitting or straws.
  • Only swish salt water after this period if it is recommended by your dentist.
  • Be careful to avoid reopening the wound in the weeks after when eating or brushing your teeth.
