Braces and Orthodontic Evaluations for Kids
Does my child need braces?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends all children get a check up with an orthodontic specialist no later than the age of seven. There are many reasons for a child’s bite to be evaluated. Pediatric dentists play an important role in evaluating a child’s bite; while teeth may appear to be straight there can be problems that pediatric dentists and orthodontists can detect. Braces can help correct problems early, before they become larger. The age of seven is a good time because of the eruption of the six year molars and the incisors. While not all problems can be detected at this point the teeth will give a good idea if there are problems that can benefit from intervention.
Pediatric dentists receive additional training in the growth and development of a child during their residency program. This training allows them to identify and correct problems if necessary. The correction of problems can help guide jaw growth, correct habits such as a thumb or pacifier, reduce the risk of dental trauma, help guide eruption of permanent teeth, and create a more aesthetic profile.
An orthodontic screening is completed by Dr. Jarod on all children regardless of age. The screening can help get children care while they are still growing rather than waiting until growth is complete. Delaying treatment in some children can lead to facial asymmetries, shifts of the midline of teeth, and changes in plane of occlusion. Dr. Jarod will discuss the screening results with caregivers and provide treatment or an orthodontic referral if necessary.
