Emergency and Pediatric Dentistry Virtual CE Program – Triage to Treatment – Dr. Jarod Johnson

Monday, April 20, 2020 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM (EDT)

Course Description

On March 16th, 2020 the American Dental Association recommended that dentists delay routine treatment and limit their practice emergency care due to concerns around the COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak.  Concerns also have arisen about the high risk of creating aerosols at a dental office while providing care at this time.  This may cause providers to consider limiting the use of many dental instruments such as ultrasonic devices and handpieces.

Providers are now challenged with providing high quality care to relive pain with limited use of conventional measures.  In 2014 the FDA approved the use of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) as a desensitizing agent for teeth.  SDF in conjunction with the use of glass ionomers can relieve pain and provide an opportunity for providers to delay definitive treatment until it is safe for each patient.

This webinar will discuss minimally invasive dentistry for pediatric and emergency patients with a focus on providing definitive care and minimizing aerosol production.

Upon completion of this CE webinar, the student will be able to:

  • Assess the emergent dental needs of a patient prior to coming into the office
  • Implement screening and infection control protocols to increase safety for patients, staff, and dental providers
  • Adequately provide a pulpal and periapical diagnosis
  • Utilize silver diamine fluoride and glass ionomers to provide palliative and definitive care
  • Adapt and implement minimally invasive dentistry protocols into everyday practice
